Italy for the first time in 60 years failed to qualify for the 2018 world cup in Russia following their goalless draw against Sweden in the second leg of their European play-off qualifiers played yesterday Monday.
The draw meant Sweden qualifies on aggregate after their 1-0 win at the first leg of the tie. Swede’s progress mean they qualify for the first time in almost ten years after been absent in the last two played in South-Africa and Brazil respectively.
In a related development Legendary goalkeeper of the Italian national team Gianluigi Buffon have confirmed his retirement from the international team following their non qualification from the 2018 Russian world cup.
Buffon while fighting back tears was quoted as saying “Not for me, but for the football movement, because we failed at something that could’ve been truly important for the country. That is the only regret I have and certainly not that I am finishing my career, because time passes and it’s only right.
It’s just a shame my last official game coincided with the failure to qualify for the world cup. There is certainly a future for Italian football, as we have pride, ability, determination, and after bad tumbles we always find a way to get back on our feet. I’m leaving an Italian side that will know how to speak for itself”
In the same vein, Andrea Barzagli and Daniele De Rossi have also decided to quit the international scene
