PDP sweeps Ekiti council poll as Fayose inaugurates new chairmen

APC says voters boycotted election
The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has won in all the 16 Local councils of Ekiti State in Saturday’s council election into Chairmanship and Councillorship seats. The Governor, Ayodele Fayose, yesterday inaugurated the 16 newly-elected chairmen with a charge not to distance themselves from their people.

Five political parties: Action Democratic Party, (ADP), National Democratic Liberty Party, (NDLP), Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), People’s Party of Nigeria, (PPN) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) participated, while the All Progressives Congress (APC), boycotted the election.

Addressing newsmen and other stakeholders shortly after the announcement of the results by all the Returning Officers, Chairman of Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC), Justice Kayode Bamisile, a retired Justice, said the election was peaceful, violent free and fair.

Bamisile who appreciated all stakeholders for supporting the state’s electoral umpire to achieve a peaceful, free and fair election, in his address said: “ We took our work seriously and put in the best, hence we are have conducted free and fair election. We had visited all LGAs, traditional rulers, security agencies, political parties and others to seek for their support and for them to mobilise their people for participation in the poll.“In totality, PDP has won all the 16 council chairmanship and councillorship seats. I appreciate Ekiti people for peaceful conduct.’’

The governor at the Government House, also announced the immediate appointment of 13 immediate past local government chairmen that were not returned for another term as Special Adviser to the governor in their respective local government areas.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has praised the people, including workers, pensioners, artisans, market women and the youth for refusing to participate in the local government election.

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti by the Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party said that the refusal of Ekiti people to participate in the election was a pointer to a total rejection of Fayose and his party and a “confirmation of our assertion that Ekiti people are only waiting for 2018 governorship election to send Fayose and his PDP into the dustbin of Ekiti political history.”

He added: “Ekiti people are seriously angry and can’t wait to vote Fayose out in a free, fair and credible election organised by a credible independent electoral commission.”
